   If the argument is that the death sentence should be a deterrent, I doubt that it would ever make a difference in these sorts of cases. Most killers, especially drunk ones, aren’t going to worry about prison, let alone balance the odds of a life sentence vs. a death sentence, when they’re so flared up they’re ready to pull a trigger.

   As a punishment, a death sentence doesn’t teach a lesson that can be learned from. No rehab here.

   So, the death penalty is usually 100% vengeance. Can’t argue with that. But I’d find more satisfaction in a redneck racist rotting in a prison and probably getting some unwanted love for the rest of their life.

   More selective judiciary bs. Retarded black guys in Florida get the chair, but stupid crackers in Arizona get lenience?

   Free will, when thwarted by alcohol, racial prejudice, and stupidity is lethal for a black man; but understandable in a white guy.

   Selective enforcement is the problem of our day.

   The death penalty has never really been a deterrent. Especially now, where it takes 20+ years for the state to kill a person for multiple homicides.

   Vengeance? In a lot of cases, probably. Personally, I look at it as protecting the rest of the herd more than vengeance. The point of life in prison is punishment. I think that’s a lot more motivated by vengeance than the death penalty is.

   With death once it’s done it’s done. Toss the body in a furnace and you never have to worry about it again. Keeping someone locked up costs a hell of a lot more than a couple rounds from a .223.

   The only problem I have with the death penalty is making sure you have the right guy. But then, I think that’s a problem in general.

   My problem has always been the unfair disposition of the death penalty - it is not possible in society for there to always be in place a fair and just jury. They will be prejudicial and sometimes that prejudice will win out. Not to mention the unfair impact of wealth - is there any doubt a wealthier suspect has a better chance of escaping the death penalty than a poorer one? Same goes for ethnic suspects. Too many variables make the imposition of the ultimate punishment inherently unfair, in my oh-so-humble opinion.

    One need only look back to the Code of Hammurabi to know that the death penalty has always been purported to be a deterrant.

    Screwed up judiciary cranks out many criminals who might have been good citizens under the right circumstances. If one accepts that there’s boiling insanity lurking under the middle class facade, then one should validate that there’s aspirations to middle class comfort amongst the criminal class.

    The judiciary makes errors and lacks an effective self-corrective mechanism. For that alone, the death penalty should be moved off the table. Prison is an excessive punishment in itself, as it’s basically a sentence to getting raped for the rest of your life. There is no such thing as criminal justice.

    Once again, a pounding at the door. Rodger eyed it suspiciously, placing the bottle on the counter. What the fuck is that? A strange feeling overcame him at that moment, a déjà vu topped with vertigo that threatened to bring him to the ground made him feel strange, disoriented.Standing in his own little kitchenette, he felt like he was in two places – next to the microwave but also outside, pressing his ear to the door to hear the man inside, bringing back his fist…The pounding started again, settling into a rhythm, a regular bass impact that seemed to shake the room. With each impact, Rodger felt a little weaker, his knees bending, his hands shaking.
    Finally, furious, Rodger stalked across the tiny room, both hands clenching into fists, and a growl began at the back of his throat as he seized the doorknob, tearing it open—
    Everything stopped, the growl dying away to silence. Rodger looked through the now-open door and saw… himself. Perhaps a bit taller, perhaps a bit more chiseled. The main difference was more fundamental, though; Rodger looked into his doppelganger’s eyes and they were cold, piercing.“Trace.” Rodger gasped the word and took a step back. “But you’re not real. I mean, you’re me.”Trace snorted. “I made some changes.” He gestured behind himself before continuing, “Now grab your cane and your shoes and get in the car. We’re going to Mexico.”
